Access Pathways in Australia
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates access to certain unregistered products in Australia through pathways such as the Special Access Scheme (SAS) and Authorised Prescriber frameworks.
As many unregistered therapeutic goods available in Australia are not TGA-approved, healthcare professionals must follow the relevant TGA requirements when managing these products in accordance with regulatory obligations.
There are two commonly referenced SAS pathways:
SAS Category B
SAS Category B is a framework that enables healthcare professionals to request consideration for the use of unapproved therapeutic goods in specific clinical circumstances, where conventional treatments may be unsuitable.
Authorised Prescriber
An Authorised Prescriber is a healthcare professional approved by the TGA to manage certain unapproved therapeutic goods for a defined group of patients, in accordance with regulatory conditions. This process helps streamline access within approved oversight parameters.
Before engaging with these frameworks, healthcare professionals should familiarise themselves with the relevant TGA guidance, supporting documentation, and monitoring obligations.
