SUPPORTING PHARMACISTS
Access Pathways in Australia
Pharmacists across Australia play an important role in managing regulated alternative therapies within Australia’s strict healthcare framework.
To support the responsible handling of these unregistered products, two key regulatory requirements apply.
TGA Approval
Pharmacies must follow relevant TGA regulatory processes when managing unregistered or emerging products. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates all therapeutic goods in Australia. Unregistered products have not undergone the full registration process for the ARTG (Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods) and are subject to additional authorisation and documentation requirements.
Authorised Prescriber
Before a pharmacy can make an unregistered regulated product available, it must have documentation from a doctor or authorised prescriber confirming TGA approval under the relevant access pathway (for example, Special Access Scheme Category B or Authorised Prescriber). This approval specifies the product type, quantity, and duration of use, as required under Australian regulations.
Just as supplying new products presents new opportunities for pharmacists, it can also involve navigating specific regulations. We’re dedicated to helping pharmacy partners through every step. Our experienced support team is here to assist, answer your questions and guide you through the diverse state regulations for compliance in Australia.
